Apricots
Apricots when ripe and golden are packed full of nutrition and are a delicious addition to any home pantry. Great for snacking on and healthy for children they can be added to salads, breakfasts and desserts or simply eaten on their own.

Apricots are seasonal from early May until July, but we cant wait that long to promote the health benefits that can be gained from such a versatile ingredient, so we popped out earlier and bought some dried ones so that we can enjoy the benefits all year round.
What are the health benefits of apricots?
Good for eye health
Apricots are a very high source of Vitamin A, which is fat soluble and excellent for the health of your eyes. Beta-carotene, present in apricots can lower the likelihood of developing eye disorders as you age.
Contain plenty of fibre
Dried apricots are a rich source of fibre, and being fat soluble the nutrients are easily absorbed and help contribute to a healthy digestive system. 1 portion of dried apricots contains up to 15% of your recommended daily fibre intake.
Great for the skin
Apricots are also great for the skin, containing vitamins, A, C and E. Consuming apricots regularly in your diet will help contribute to slowing down the ageing process and keeping your skin in good condition.
Good for your bones.
Apricots contain calcium which is necessary for bone health. However calcium needs potassium to ensure that it is absorbed properly and guess what? Apricots are high in potassium! Win – win!
Dried v Fresh
Due to seasonality, with fresh apricots in season from May-July you may prefer to purchase the dried variety.
Dried apricots are available all year round and are a convenient way to incorporate them into your diet.
Dried fruits in general contain more fibre and have more antioxidant properties than the fresh version, but watch out for added sugar in the packs you may buy. Always check the ingredients so that you know what it is you are eating.

When you know that summer is just round the corner, pop out and try some fresh apricots to liven up your desserts and incorporate them into your breakfast to help kick start the day.
